Last Journal

In this class, I have written lots of English writings I have ever did in my whole life ! Actually, I thought writing journal every week would not be helpful for me because I just write and there is no one who corrects my wrong grammar or structures. However, I think this assignment really helped me ! To write one journal, I should think of all of my ideas in English, which is a good method to reorganize my all thoughts in English. I always have interest in writing so I can promise all of you I will keep practicing English writing in Korea, but speaking English is still a big problem to me.!!!.... I will try to have confidence in speaking, and if I do like that I believe I can meet with good results someday.
I won't forget a wealth of delightful memories in this class ! Thanks Sean and all my classmates !!!!!!!!!!!!

I always have been interested in nature and the culture of undeveloped human beings. This movie attracted my attention thorough the whole beautiful scenes and the topic. In particularly, I am really impressed with "Adorment", how cultures around the world decorate themselves, because my research essay topic is also Cosmetics, so I found out something similar with my topic in this themes.

The native people draw several lines on their face with white materials and also on their stomach. I think it means they want to protect themselves from wild animals and shows their hope to be attractive to others. And during my essay, I found out the reason why native people decorate their hair style gorgeously is they want to distinguish themselves from other tribes. Each tribe has their own tradition and their culture, so it is no wonder about their decoration of the outer appearance. They also wined their body with red and blue threads. Even some of children pierced their chin and hanged up colorful rings. Their clothes were all red, yellow, blue and something bright color which are hand made by themselves. The most interesting scene was their dancing scenes with many neighborhood in a circle. They looked very comfortable and were all absorbed in dacing together. I realized the definition of happiness is different each person and each culture. In my eyes, their life didn't look wealthy or rich, but they had a freedom I can't feel in my life. So I want to live like them someday....:D(I am not sure! when the day comes ! )

Dear Mom.

Hi mom?? How are you? Everything goes well? I always think about you and I miss all of my memories in Korea. Today, I have something to tell you and I don’t know how you would respond to me. I have a boy friend now, and we are seeing each other very seriously. Maybe, you can think about my safety and studying. He doesn’t have a gun, so you don’t need to worry about it and I always should use English to talk with him. It is very nice for me, because it is not boring and my English speaking skill is getting better since I have met him. As you know, I already had a boy friend when I was a high school student. At the time, I had to study very hard to enter the university I want. I didn’t want to disappoint you, so I tried to do my best. I promise you I will not disappoint you by seeing my boy friend here. Whether I have a boy friend or not does not matter, because I can do my jobs as I did. When I came here, I felt very lonely and I needed someone to talk with. My boy friend is very attractive, handsome, kind and very smart but I mostly love his warm heart for me. Without his help, I could not adjust to American Life Style. I am very happy now and I think you also want for me to be happy. Don’t worry about me anymore !

In Taipei, five people were killed and 84 injured Wednesday, because a tree hit a train in which there were Chinese tourists. The train was going through a forest area of Mount Ali and the tree trunk made four carriages overturn. Unfortunately, the government said there are more 42 people who were seriously hurt. Taiwanese officials have promised to help families of the Chines tourists to come to the island. Injured people were moved by helicopter to the safe area and other injured passengers were moved to nearby hospital to cure their injuries. The accidents like this have happened including one incident in 2003 that killed 17 people.

Nicole Felton. (April 12, 2011). Coffee can be healthy. Daily Titan.

The author says having at least two cups of coffee in the morning is a way to be healthy. There are many beneficial effects of coffee and the author specifically tells us the exact definition list of health benefits like brain health, diabetes health and heart health etc. He tries to appeal to trust and values, so he cites Joe Vinson, Ph.D., a coffee expert at the University of Scranton, drinking around two cups of coffee in a day will lead to certain health benefits. By quoting the expert’s comment, he tries to make us believe his argument. Also, he uses a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition to give how much the evidence of the benefits of coffee is right and how much we can lower the risk of many diseases by two cups of coffee. This article is very logical and I can trust the article, because the article also says about the bad effects of coffee like the addict for caffeine and sleeping lately. Before reading this article, I heard of the benefits of coffee from my American friend, who also said many American people always find at least a cup of coffee a day. Finally, I think the coffee has the good effects for my health for the trusty figure of the study used in this article.

In this database, Sara Goering explains about the history of cosmetics easily to understand. Firstly, she talks about the practice of painting and tattooing the body dates back to early-Neanderthal humans. I could find the fact that the initial purpose of cosmetics at the time was not only to enhance beauty, but for camouflage to fear in others and representation of animal gods in ritual ceremonies. Then, he compares the purpose of cosmetics of Neanderthal humans with ancient Egyptians’, who focused on eye make-up for protection from the sun as well as for decoration. These two examples from different countries are very useful for me to broaden my essay, because I can compare two or more countries about the different means of cosmetics in my essay.

I researched for cosmetics and there were lots of information about the origin, bad effects and some experiments on animals for better cosmetics. All of those attracted my attention, but I chose the origin as my topic. There are many countries using cosmetics for different purposes and to different people. It is very interesting because most modern people can get their cosmetics whenever they want. I will specifically research about how cosmetics has changed over history. Most women like to decorate by themselves to be more beautiful than others. And many women use their money on buying new items. Until now, I have used up a lot of cosmetics to take care of my skin, but I didn’t have interest in the origin. I really want to know about the origin and how old people used their cosmetics and what purpose. Then, I can compare the different things together.

I have no plan to do in spring break not yet, but there my birthday is between spring days. I want to spend my birthday at a beautiful beach. I want to see an evening glow in the sky with my boyfriend. Maybe, we will rent a car to go there, and I want to make good memories. ! 

Since I have no plan exactly yet, I will talk about the travel to Las Vegas. A few weeks ago, I went to Las Vegas with my friend and boyfriend. It took 4 hours from Fullerton to go there, but I was happy because I have longed to ride a car on an endless freeway listening my favorite music as like a scene of car CF. My dream came true and I enjoyed myself. As soon as we arrived at our hotel, we went out for dinner. Las Vegas had many famous and cheap buffet restaurants. We chose one restaurant and tried to eat up all the food provided by good chief. It was a nice place to eat beef like a steak and lots of sea foods.

And, the night of Las Vegas was very awesome and I could see many tourists like us walking around busily to see more free shows. On the top of the Eiffel Tower, I saw all the town and I felt like being on the sky. The entrance fee was 10$ for each person, but the scene I saw was more valuable than 10$. After seeing all the downtown walking like a circle on the top, we went down to see a volcano show. On the center of the lake, there were many lights and real fire. The music added more fun and I was moved by the beautiful and magnificent show. All the free shows we saw were given by the city and many people altogether enjoyed them. It was an very nice experience and I took many pictures to memorize later.        

If I have a chance to go there again in approaching spring break, I will put the place in my second journey schedule.

I have two dogs in my home and I often try to talk with them. If they use their own language to talk with their friends or human, there will happen funny situations. For example, these days, a lot of people have a pet in their homes to escape feelings of loneliness. If their pet could speak, some people fall in love with their pet. They will stay home together everyday and the owner will try to talk about his business or troubles. Their feelings towards each other will be serious.

I want to ask animals about the color they can recognize and how they can interact with each animals. I think each animal has their ways to communicate from others. If I find the information, I will have a conversation with them as they teach me. Also, I want ask about the characteristics of people they most like. I love animals including my house dogs, so I want to make them happy and pleasant everyday. If they have some preference for people, I will be the person and there is no doubt that I am the popular person among animals in the world.

journal 10 "advice"

In my case, some people gave the most powerful influential advice to me about my university life. I don't know exactly who they are, because they shared their worthwhile university life story with blogger. I was one of the blogger and I could have good advice on university life. They said we should have a part time job before entering school or after entering school to feel the importance of money and learn how to use it and save it. I decided to seek a part time job before entering my school. So, I chose a korean traditional food restaurant near my house before entering my school. The owner of the restaurant showed me how to bow politely to customers. You can think it is easy, but I should stand all day and serve them with smile. It was very stressful for me and there were many impolite people. At that time, I realized earing money is very difficult matter and I started thinking about my parents' labour for our family again. It is precious memory I have and the advice someone gave me has very important role in my life still.

If my friend said, “Let’s go eat American”, I will think about a sliced pizza and a hamburger. When I came here, I saw many fast food restaurants along the road and on campus. Even my home stay family eats some bread with cheese and a cup of juice or coffee every morning. I alone eat rice with side dishes between them. Mostly, they eat out dinner so, I don’t know what they eat outside but when they prepare dinner at home, they always eat beef or sausages with some vegetables. I think the food I mentioned above is the traditional American food. Although the taste is good, I don’t enjoy them because it makes me eat more and more and looks unhealthy. Instead of steaks and hamburgers, I enjoy eating cereal ,when I get up late, not to be late for my class. It is easy to make and doesn’t need many times to eat it up.

In Korea, most people eat rice and Kim-ch or other side dishes for their meals. Our food is very healthy because it is originated from ancient by using vegetables without any additives. However, most American foods need additives to extend an expiration date. In this case, the food can sell for a long time, but the effects of additives are harmful for people.

So, I like my Korean food very very very very very much.
And I always miss them.......:D

The quote means the point of view I have toward the world. We always have to keep our mind in optimistic or pessimistic while living our lives. I think the quote makes sense, because an optimistic mind calms me down when I face some difficult situations and make me try to do another activity in the desperate circumstances. I always try to behave optimistically and have a positive mind. Unless I have the mind, I don't feel to do anything, and just want to lie down on the bed. I want to have busy life not idle life. In other words, the optimistic thought is the motive of my action.

I have an example when I was a first year student in my university. I was getting fat for drinking lately at night and greasy snacks and sausages served with alcoholic beverages. I didn't know about my growing fat but someday, I feel my pants a bit tight. I was shocked about that and decided to lose my weight. I always did exercise and walking around near a dormitory. Before long, I don't want to exercise everyday due to the cold weather. After one month, I took my weight but the weight was same as before. I was frustrated for the fail. However, I worked out again every day for imagining my slim legs ,waist and wearing a bikini in my imagination in a beach. My diet was successful and I returned to my original state.

I didn't give up with having positive mind to succeed in losing my weight. I thinkg this shows how the positive mind effects the result.

In Korea, I have many friends and their all characteristics are totally different. Because I can't write their all personalities, I would choose just one person. The name of my friend I want to compare with me is In-hae Jung. I have many stories related with her. Firstly, When we were a highschool student, many peers told us our appearance look alike so we are confused with your names. About one semester, we had to tell our names to schoolmates, whenever we met them. It was interesting and I really enjoyed doing that. I think the reason why they are confused with our names is that I and my friend had a same hair-style and same glasses and same uniforms. Secondly, we had not only the similar face but same laughter, which always filled our classroom. Many people even our teacher said our laughter make other people happy and pleasant. After having this praise, we always smiled together to make other people happy.

However, we have different hobbies. She enjoys singing and I hate singing in the presence of other people. I think she is gifted with singing, no matter how the song is new, she listens to the song just twice and sings like the original singer. I always had an appreciation of her beautiful songs. She always tried to make me sing, but always failed. I was stubborn with singing and there is no one hearing my song until now, except for my middle school friends. We have one more different religion. She believes in God and I don't believe in any Gods. She used to go to church on weekends and I slept late on Sunday morning. After holiday, she always told me about the events happening in the church. I don't praise the Lord, but it was very funny to hear about her stories. Her tone of voice seemed like a comedian, so she always made me laugh at the story in joy and in sorrow.

I really had a unforgettable memories with her in my school days. Although, we have many similarities and different preference on cloths, foods and ideal type for boy friend, we are really best friends now.

I bought my new bike here to go to school. My boyfriend also got a bike from his house owner. On weekends, we meet and go around here. Firstly, we have been to a Turi Park, which is located near my home. I prepared some foods and my camera to take a picture with him. As we got there, there were many people around the lake. I also could see many ducks but the feathers looked like dirty. Someone came next to us and fed them. When it was getting dark, we could enjoy the setting sun. It was so beautiful that I made up mind to visit here again when I have some troubles or lonely. Secondly, I went to Brea mall. It was awesome because the cosmetics were really cheaper than Korea. In the near future, I will change my cosmetics with new one. I was really happy to see the mall. And then, we visited the near park but I don’t know the name exactly. There was also a lake like Turi Park. Many people came with their family and enjoyed playing ball. Some couples sat on a bench talking with their honey.

On the transportation, I don't have any opinion. Because I have my bike, and I don't need to take a bus. Some of my friends have experienced the transportation. They said the bus sometimes is late for the time and there is no many time schedule. In my country, the transportation system is very well developed. I can see where the bus is now and how long it takes to come to my station. There are many buses each 15 minutes. It is very convenient and the bus fee is not expensive. For these reasons, many students use the bus transportation rather than buy their own car.

My favorite and significant song is a "Song for sienna"

I heard a "Song for sienna" of Brian Crain 1years before. My friend recommended the song for me in library. I and my friend were preparing for the final exam. To take a rest, we went out for walking around and listend the music together. At that time, I felt very calmness and relaxed. Brian Crain made the song after traveling to small city, Sienna, in Italy. The city inspired him very strong feeling. When he came back home, he made this song. I think he expressed the experience of exotic atmosphere in Italy.

It make me have more positive view of life. When I was stressed out for the exam or other things. I always listened to popular korean musics to relax. I've heard many musics but there was no impressive songs to remember. However, I've always been listening this song everyday before going to bed. I can sleep well and there is no nightmare. I love this song. It is really beautiful and lovely music. I want for you to have a chance to hear this song.

Korea has clear four seasons and I hate summer and winter. Because, I don't like to bring my umbrella when heavy rain is approaching my country in summer. It really irritates me and I often lose my umbrella so I should by new one every year. Winter is very freezing and I often catch a cold. I have to see a doctor every year for the same reason.

My favorite weather is spring. I like a breeze not a strong wind. The warm sunshine in spring makes me happy and pleasant. At my home, I could often enjoy many flowers and trees around my house because there was a floor in garden. Lying on the floor, I could see the clear sky and feel the nature quitely alone. Everything seemed to be calmness and I took a positive view of life. Another reason is that my favorite flower is a forsythia, the symbol of the spring, which blooms just in spring. To remember the scenery I like to take a picture with the flower.

Journal 3: Old Fears

I have a fear about singing in front of other people. I liked to sing any song when I was a high school student. Someday, I and my friends had a chance to go to Noraebang(like a Karaoke, it is a legal place for students). I chose my song but my friend said to me "Don't sing the song, I hate the song". When I heard my friend's voice, I was very depressed. Since then, I don't like to go to Noraebang because of her. Maybe, you will think it is not important thing. But I lost my interest in singing. I tried singing in front of new people in university, but my voice was too trembling and I couldn't sing perfectly in tune because I was too nervous and fear about singing in public.

To overcome my fear, I chose one person who was my friend. We went to Noraebang often together and practiced hard. I think it is very helpful experience for me to overcome to sing.

My New Year's Resolution : 2

My New Year's resolution is healthy and studying. I want to enjoy yoga in my spare time. When I visited my friend's home, she taught me yoga, at that time, I felt it was very relaxing. Also, practicing yoga helps me stay phisically healthy. When I practice yoga, I feel more fit and energetic and it will be helpful for me to lose weight. To do yoga, I will buy a yoga video or CD and I will do that everyday for 1hours.

Secondly, I chose studying. I want to speak English fluently. I can study reading and grammar section in my country, but speaking is a sort of difficult. To enhance my pronounciation, I will meet many friends through school programs. Now, I'm always checking community site. If I find some good clubs or events, I will participae in that community. I will keep a diary not to forget my special day. !

Journal 1: Introductions

Nice to meet you! My name is Yeon-Hee Kang, which is my korean name. In America, I decided to use "Ella". Fortunately, my homestay father gave me a list on many American girls name. It was very helpful for me to choose my name. I think it is easy for you to call this name than my korean name. I am 22 years old, female and come from Kroea(not North Korea). In korea, my major is English and English Literature. I have 2 sisters and I am the second daughter in my family. I'm easy to get along with new people and responsible. To relieve my stress, I sleep all day and eat lots of spicy foods and cry.
